Model names are examples at the time of writing; ranges change every year or two. Buy a sleeve of two candidates and compare them around the green before buying a dozen.

What actually matters

Cover: urethane covers (tour balls) grab the grooves and give more spin on short shots. Ionomer/Surlyn covers are tougher and spin less, which helps keep drives straighter.

Compression: lower-compression balls feel softer and suit slower swings. Faster swingers usually get tighter dispersion and better control from firmer, higher-compression balls.

Start with the short game. Most amateurs lose more shots around the green than off the tee, so choose a ball you like chipping and putting with.
