Round report

Smotherman's 62 takes Utah lead as Roy stays a shot behind

Austin Smotherman birdied his last three holes for a nine-under 62 and a one-shot lead on 17 under at the Bank of Utah Championship, with Kevin Roy bogey-free in second. Darkness halted round two with one group on the 17th green.

Austin Smotherman leads the Bank of Utah Championship by one at halfway. Smotherman, 32, followed his opening 63 with a nine-under 62, finishing birdie, birdie, birdie, to reach 17 under at Black Desert.

Kevin Roy is second on 16 under after a second straight 63 and has not made a bogey in 36 holes. Round two was suspended for darkness on Friday evening with one group, Alejandro Tosti, Jesper Svensson and amateur Bowen Mauss, still on the 17th green. None of the three is in contention, so the top of the board below is complete.

Three birdies to finish

Smotherman made an early bogey, then answered with two separate three-hole birdie runs. He went in front with a nine-foot putt at the par-4 16th, a 20-footer at the par-3 17th and a two-putt birdie at the par-5 18th. His 62 matched Bauchou’s Thursday score as the low round of the week, and Doug Ghim’s 62 later joined them.

Smotherman is chasing his first PGA TOUR win, and Field Level Media notes that a win here would also bring a place in the 2027 Signature Events. He and Roy will play together in the final group on Saturday. Golf Channel reported that the pair, who are friends, sat a row apart on the flight to Utah, and Smotherman expects “some good banter”.

Ghim, Shipley and Kirk climb; Bauchou and Dunlap slide

Doug Ghim climbed 14 places to tie for third with a 62. Neal Shipley went up 33 spots with a 63, and Chris Kirk rose 45 places with another 63. Kevin Streelman shot 64, though he missed a birdie try from the fringe at the last that would have tied him with Roy.

Defending champion Michael Brennan added a 66 to sit five back on 12 under.

Zach Bauchou, Thursday’s leader, shot 69 and slipped to a share of ninth. Nick Dunlap went from a share of second to 56th with a 73, and Jordan Smith, who made an albatross in round one, shot a level-par 71 and is tied 35th.

Koivun on the number, Finau out

The cut is the top 65 and ties, and the official leaderboard projects it at six under. With 68 players already finished at six under or better, it cannot get any easier. Jackson Koivun birdied his last hole for a 67 and is right on the number. Tony Finau, playing at home, shot 68 but will miss out at four under. Cam Davis, Maverick McNealy, Lucas Glover and Max Greyserman finished a shot outside at five under, and Zach Johnson is one over.
