Cape Town and the Winelands: a golf trip for the northern winter
While Europe's courses go soggy, the Western Cape heads into its dry, sunny summer. Where to play around Cape Town, the Winelands and the Overberg coast, when to go and how to plan it.
When the clocks go back in Europe, the Western Cape is heading into summer. Cape Town has a Mediterranean climate, and the Cape Tourism guide puts the dry months at November to March, with only 10–20mm of rain a month, against 70–90mm a month in the wet winter from May to August.
Cape Town is two hours ahead of GMT, so there is no jet lag to speak of from Europe, and a cluster of top-ranked courses lies within an easy drive of one airport.
November to March, and the Cape Doctor
November to March is the main season: long, dry, warm days, with Cape Tourism giving average January highs of around 26°C. The south-easterly “Cape Doctor” blows mostly in summer and can be ferocious.
SA-Venues calls March and April the ideal time in the Western Cape, as the heat eases and conditions settle.
Cape Town: Royal Cape and Steenberg
Royal Cape was founded in 1885 and calls itself Africa’s oldest championship golf club. It sits in Wynberg, in the southern suburbs. According to the club, the South African Open has been played there ten times, with winners at the course including Gary Player, Ernie Els and Trevor Immelman. It has also hosted the Cape Town Open every year since 2012.
Expect flat, tree-lined parkland with narrow fairways, plenty of ponds and a near-constant wind. Visitors can book online, and the club publishes green fees that run from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2027.
Further south, Steenberg brings the vineyards into play. The course, which the club credits to Peter Matkovich and Hayes and which opened in 1996 according to SA Top 100 Courses, runs through vineyards and pines and past small waterways in the Constantia Valley, with the mountains behind. The 7th is a par 3 to an island green surrounded by sand and water, with Devil’s Peak in the background. The par-3 14th has what the club describes as the largest green in Africa, 76 metres long. Steenberg hosted the South African Women’s Open in 2022 and 2023, according to SA Top 100 Courses.
Steenberg uses dynamic pricing, so visitor green fees move with demand and weather, and the club lists a visitor cart at R800 for 18 holes for 2026–27 at the time of writing. The Steenberg Hotel & Spa sits on the same estate.
The Winelands: Pearl Valley and Erinvale
Pearl Valley, near Paarl and about an hour from Cape Town, is where Jack Nicklaus opened his Signature course in 2003. He called it “one of the most spectacular settings in which I have designed a golf course”.
Pearl Valley is third in the 2026 SA Top 100 Courses ranking, the highest of any course within easy reach of Cape Town. Expect bent-grass greens, 88 bunkers and five sets of tees, plus a pair of parallel par 4s at the 7th and 8th divided by water. Pearl Valley hosted the South African Open three times in a row from 2007 to 2009. It is also the most expensive here. SA Top 100 Courses lists visitor rates of R4,300 walking or R4,625 with a cart, with dynamic pricing at busy times, so check when you book. The on-site Pearl Valley Hotel has 69 suites looking over the course, and the wine estates around Franschhoek, Paarl and Stellenbosch are all close by.

Erinvale in Somerset West, a Gary Player design from 1995, is the other Winelands option. The club says it is around 30 minutes from Cape Town International Airport. According to SA Top 100 Courses, the front nine is flat, with water on six holes, before the back nine climbs the Helderberg with views over False Bay. It hosted the 1996 World Cup of Golf and the South African Women’s Open in 2024 and 2025.
The Overberg coast: Arabella
If you only add one road trip, make it Arabella, on the R44 near Kleinmond. Peter Matkovich’s 1999 course is sixth in the 2026 SA Top 100 ranking. The 8th and 9th and the closing three holes run along the Bot River Lagoon, with the fynbos-covered Kogelberg mountains behind. The 17th is a par 3 beside the water and the 18th is a par 5 that bends right around the lagoon’s edge.
At the end of 2025 the club swapped the pars on the 2nd and 3rd, turning a short par 5 into a long par 4 and the following long par 4 into a par 5. SA Top 100 Courses lists a non-affiliated green fee of R2,150 and a cart at R690 at the time of writing. The Arabella Hotel, Golf & Spa is on the estate, and the hotel says bookings can be made up to a year in advance, with a 48-hour cancellation policy.
Flights from Europe and a hire car
Cape Town International Airport is around 20km from the city centre. It has direct flights from London Heathrow (British Airways), Amsterdam (KLM) and Frankfurt (Lufthansa), and more European routes are added in the southern summer, including Gatwick, Munich, Zurich and Paris. A hire car is close to essential, because the courses are spread out.
For the simplest plan, split the week: three or four nights in Constantia or the southern suburbs for Royal Cape and Steenberg, then three nights in the Winelands for Pearl Valley and Erinvale, with Arabella as a day trip or an overnight on the coast.
Book Pearl Valley and Arabella first
Pearl Valley and Arabella are the rounds we would lock in before anything else, especially in peak summer. Bring your handicap certificate: South African clubs commonly charge different rates for affiliated and non-affiliated golfers, so ask what proof of membership the club accepts.
The Garden Route, for another trip
The Garden Route is a trip in its own right. The Links at Fancourt, in George, tops the 2026 SA Top 100 ranking, with Fancourt Montagu and Pinnacle Point also in the top 15.
