Mauritius golf: which hotels get you onto the five main courses
The Mauritius Open returns to Mont Choisy in December. Which hotel groups get you onto the island's five main courses, what a round costs their guests, and when to go.
The AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open returns to Mont Choisy Le Golf, on the island’s north-west coast, from 10 to 13 December, with a $1.5m purse, co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour and the Sunshine Tour. Since 2022 the tournament has switched between the north and the south every year: Mont Choisy in 2022 and 2024, La Réserve Golf Links at Bel Ombre in 2023 and 2025.
Those two clubs, Le Château next door to La Réserve, and the pair of courses on the east coast, Ile aux Cerfs and Anahita, are what most visiting golfers come to Mauritius for. Each course is tied to a hotel group, and the groups give their own guests free or reduced rounds that someone staying down the coast does not get.
| Course | Coast | Hotel terms at the time of writing |
|---|---|---|
| La Réserve Golf Links | South, Bel Ombre | Members and Heritage guests; €210 a round for Heritage Le Telfair guests |
| Le Château | South, Bel Ombre | Open to visitors; €50 a round for Heritage Le Telfair guests |
| Ile aux Cerfs | East, in the lagoon | One free round a day for Shangri-La Le Touessrok guests staying five nights or more; free and unlimited for Long Beach guests |
| Anahita | East | The same Shangri-La and Long Beach terms |
| Mont Choisy Le Golf | North-west, Grand Baie | Golf packs for Beachcomber guests, up to 12 nights |
Bel Ombre: Heritage’s 45 holes
La Réserve opened days before the 2023 Mauritius Open, and in March Golfweek ranked it 28th in its 2026 list of the best courses outside the United States. Peter Matkovich designed it with Louis Oosthuizen, and the club bills it as the Indian Ocean’s first contemporary links. The ground changes height by about 200 metres across the property. Three par 4s – the 3rd, 10th and 16th – finish on greens with nothing visible behind them but sky, and the short par-3 17th is modelled on the 12th at Waterville in Ireland, according to the club. Oosthuizen said at the launch: “My love of links, the purest form of golf, will be experienced on every hole at La Réserve Golf Links.”
The course is kept for club members and Heritage Resorts guests. Heritage Le Telfair lists the guest green fee at €210, with a shared buggy and a pyramid of range balls; Heritage’s own booking page quotes rounds “as from €130”. Every tee time has to be booked in advance, and there are no caddies.
Le Château, the older Matkovich course in the grounds of the 19th-century château at Bel Ombre, takes visitors who book online, and Le Telfair guests pay €50 a round with a buggy. Its 9th is the par 4 where Javier Colomo holed his tee shot at the 2015 Mauritius Open. A nine-hole par-3 course makes up the 45.
Heritage’s Stay & Play packages put the two together: five nights at Le Telfair or Heritage Awali with two rounds on Le Château and one at La Réserve, or seven nights with three rounds on Le Château and two at La Réserve, transfers included. Guests on the Gourmet Bliss and Premium All-Inclusive plans who stay seven nights or more get one round on each course.
The east coast: Ile aux Cerfs and Anahita
Bernhard Langer’s course covers 38 hectares of Ile aux Cerfs, an island in the lagoon off Trou d’Eau Douce, reached by boat or helicopter. From the Langer tees it measures 6,452 metres with a slope rating of 155, according to Shangri-La; the forward tees cut it to 4,536 metres. Anahita is Ernie Els’s design, built in 2008 on a former sugar plantation: two loops of nine between old dry-stone walls, 6,828 metres from the back tees, with six holes on the ocean.
Shangri-La Le Touessrok runs free boats to Ile aux Cerfs and gives guests who stay at least five nights one complimentary round a day on either course; cars to Anahita cost extra. Sun Resorts’ Long Beach offers free, unlimited green fees on both, with free transfers. At Ambre, another Sun hotel, the unlimited Ile aux Cerfs offer ran from 1 November 2025 to 31 October 2026, so check what replaces it before booking. Buggies are compulsory from October to April, and Ile aux Cerfs charges a Rs 100 sustainability fee per round, according to Sun Resorts. A missed pre-booked round on either course costs €100 for 18 holes, or €60 for nine, unless it is cancelled the day before.
Grand Baie: Mont Choisy and the Open
Mont Choisy Le Golf is also a Matkovich layout, par 72 and 6,245 metres among lakes and volcanic rock, and the only one of the five on the drier western side of the island. Beachcomber sells golf packs to guests of its resorts for stays of up to 12 nights, and the version with a cart lets players switch between Mont Choisy and the group’s Paradis Golf Club. Transfers to Mont Choisy from Paradis and Dinarobin, the two Beachcomber hotels at Le Morne in the south-west, are not included. Visitors book through the club on +230 260 1000.
Spectators at December’s Open pay Rs 900 for a weekday general pass and Rs 2,600 for a season pass, according to the tournament.
Dry season May to October, cyclones January to March
Heritage puts the island’s cooler, drier season at May to October and recommends it for golf. On the Met Office’s figures, average highs run from 30.1°C in January to 24.6°C in July. February is the wettest month, with 253mm of rain on average, and October the driest, with 53mm. Cyclones are a summer risk, mainly from January to March, though Heritage says direct hits are rare.
The south-easterly trade winds blow hardest in July and August, and the Met Office says they make the east and south coasts feel cooler, so take a layer for Bel Ombre, Ile aux Cerfs and Anahita in midwinter. December, the Open’s month, is early summer: an average high of 29.7°C and 119mm of rain.
Gatwick to Plaine Magnien
Air Mauritius and British Airways both fly nonstop from Gatwick to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International, with scheduled times between 11 hours 40 minutes and 12 hours 5 minutes. The airport is at Plaine Magnien in the south-east, 48km from Port Louis, so Bel Ombre and the east-coast hotels are nearer the arrivals hall than Grand Baie.
