First look

New PXG Secret Weapon mini driver: shorter, with more spin, for $499

PXG's second Secret Weapon keeps the 13° loft and 300cc head but is half an inch shorter and adds spin, after tour players said the first one went too far.

When Caleb Kroloff, PXG’s director of woods research and development, asked the company’s tour players what the second Secret Weapon mini driver needed, they told him: “Do not change the shape. Don’t mess with it,” MyGolfSpy reports. The new model was listed on PXG’s US website on 22 October with the same 13° loft and 300cc head as the first.

They also told PXG that the original went too far. PXG’s answer is more spin: the new head is meant to land the ball more steeply and run out less, which the company told MyGolfSpy gives “the same distance in a different way”. When the first model launched in January 2025, GOLF.com reported that PXG’s robot testing gave it about 3mph more ball speed than the Black Ops 3-wood, with 300rpm less spin.

Half an inch shorter, with 15g less in the sole

The standard length drops from 43.75in to 43.25in. The four sole ports at heel, toe, front and back are still there, but the weights in them are lighter. The new model comes with two of 7.5g and two of 2.5g, 20g in all. The first came with two of 15g and two of 2.5g, 35g in all. Weights from 2.5g to 20g are sold separately. PXG lists the head at 215g. It says weight saved by a reworked internal sole structure has gone to the perimeter, and that the carbon-fibre crown lets it put more weight low and deep in the head.

The face is 4.4% thinner than before, PXG says, and is “right to the legal USGA speed limit”. The laser-etched face pattern from PXG’s drivers carries over, and the hosel still adjusts loft and lie.

One round and two tour wins

After a single round, Tony Covey of MyGolfSpy wrote that the new head moved through the turf well and launched higher off the deck than any mini driver he had played, though he called the impression anecdotal. MyGolfSpy also reports that Jake Knapp, a PXG staff player, hits his Secret Weapon off the tee as many as 10 times a round. The first model won twice before it reached shops: Nico Echavarria won the Zozo Championship with it in October 2024, and Knapp had it in the bag when he and Patty Tavatanakit won the unofficial Grant Thornton Invitational in December.

Golfers who bought the first model for its run on firm ground may lose some of that with the new head. With no spin figures from PXG, we would compare the two on a launch monitor before replacing an original.

Price and availability

PXG lists the new Secret Weapon at $499 in the US, up from $449.99 for the first model. The first model cost £429 in the UK, according to Today’s Golfer; PXG had not given a UK price for the new one at the time of writing.

MyGolfSpy names the stock shafts as the Project X Denali Frost Blue and the HZRDUS Black (GEN5), and says the club is sold on pxg.com, at PXG fitting locations and through selected retailers, including PGA TOUR Superstore. It comes in right- and left-handed versions, with a standard lie of 58.5°.
