McDowell rules out LIV 2.0 before November talks with the DP World Tour
Graeme McDowell gave up his European membership when he joined LIV in 2022. He has now left the league and is due to meet DP World Tour officials next month about 2027.
Graeme McDowell is due to meet DP World Tour officials in November to settle where he plays in 2027. “I’ve decided not to pursue LIV 2.0,” he wrote on X on Monday, the day after the league’s deadline for players to commit to its relaunch. The Financial Times reports that the date that counts is Friday 30 October: under the terms of the Public Investment Fund’s bankruptcy loan, LIV has until then to sign enough players for BC Partners Credit’s rescue.
McDowell, 47, resigned his DP World Tour and PGA TOUR memberships when he joined LIV in June 2022. He told BBC Sport in July that he had paid his DP World Tour fines and had been talking to the tour. “If LIV gets something done, great,” he said. “If they don’t, then maybe I’m just a European Tour player.”
He has 11 DP World Tour wins and four on the PGA TOUR, won the 2010 US Open at Pebble Beach and played in four Ryder Cups. His last DP World Tour start outside the majors was the 2022 BMW PGA Championship, according to Sky Sports. He did not win an individual event on LIV; his best finish was a tie for second at LIV Golf Virginia in 2025.
Without membership, he would depend on the process the tour approved this month for players leaving LIV, under which some will be offered invitations for 2027, though not to Rolex Series events. Bob Harig’s newsletter, The Daily Drive, puts the number of invitations available to that programme at 140 to 160 of the more than 200 sponsor invitations across the tour’s events.
McDowell told BBC Sport he wants to stay competitive until he turns 50, in July 2029.
