GB&I thrash the US at the K Club for record PGA Cup win

Great Britain & Ireland's club professionals beat the United States 16½–9½ in County Kildare, their first PGA Cup win since 2017 and their highest points total in the event's history.

David Scott’s Great Britain & Ireland team beat the United States 16½–9½ in the 32nd PGA Cup on the South Course at the K Club in County Kildare on Sunday, ending a nine-year wait for the Llandudno Trophy.

The total is a record for GB&I in the contest, beating the 16 points they won at their last victory in 2017, according to Irish Golfer. It is their eighth PGA Cup win and their second at the K Club.

GB&I led 6–2 after Friday and 11½–4½ after Saturday, leaving them needing only two points from Sunday’s ten singles.

The Americans, captained by Ben Polland, shared the singles 5–5. The clinching point came from Toby Hunt, whose par putt on the 15th put him three up with three to play and guaranteed the half-point GB&I needed. He went on to beat Brandon Bingaman 3&2. Ben Amor’s halved match with Ryan Lenahan then confirmed the record total.

GB&I were not beaten in any of the five sessions, and all ten players contributed at least a point.

Scotland’s Graeme Robertson of Glenbervie won all five of his matches on his PGA Cup debut, including a 3&1 singles win over Brian Bergstol. He and Gavin Hay of East Renfrewshire won all four of their pairs matches across the first two days.

Ireland’s Harry Casey was too unwell to play on Friday but returned to win the anchor singles 4&3 against Austin Hurt.

For the US, Zach Haynes finished with a 2-1-1 record, and Jesse Droemer beat Hay 4&3 in the singles.

The PGA Cup is the club professionals’ version of the Ryder Cup, contested by PGA professionals who run pro shops, teach and manage clubs rather than play the tours.

Scott, who manages Dumbarnie Links in Fife, put the win down to team spirit. “The heart in the team is tremendous,” he said, according to PGA of America.

The Ryder Cup comes to Ireland next September, at Adare Manor.
