Round report

Chacarra shares lead in Madrid on a fractured toe as Hillier aces 17th

Eugenio Chacarra shot 66 with two eagles despite a broken toe to share the Open de España lead with Scots Connor Syme and Grant Forrest, while Daniel Hillier won a car with a hole-in-one.

Eugenio Chacarra fractured a toe on a midnight trip for a glass of water in the United States last week. On Thursday he shot a five-under 66 at Club de Campo, with two eagles, to share the lead in his national open with Scotland’s Connor Syme and Grant Forrest.

Whether he tees off again is another matter. He said swinging didn’t hurt but walking did, and that he would sit down with his team to decide whether to carry on. Chacarra is third in the Race to Dubai, and a win here combined with a missed cut for the leader, Patrick Reed, would take him to the top, according to the DP World Tour.

Daniel Hillier, the New Zealander, holed an eight-iron at the par-three 17th for his first hole-in-one on the DP World Tour, which won him a BMW iX5 worth €140,000. His 67 left him one shot off the lead.

Hillier’s ace is in the DP World Tour’s round-one highlights.

Two eagles for Chacarra, a chip-in for Syme

Chacarra started at the 10th and bogeyed the 12th, but an eagle and a birdie at the 18th had him two under at the turn. Birdies at the second and fourth took him to four under before he gave both back with bogeys at the fifth and sixth. An approach to four feet at the par-five seventh set up his second eagle, and a birdie at the par-three ninth set the clubhouse target.

Syme also started at the 10th and made five birdies on that nine. He saved par with a chip-in at the first and briefly led outright at six under after a two-putt birdie at the fourth. His only dropped shot came at the eighth. He started the week 147th in the Race to Dubai but is exempt next year as last season’s KLM Open champion.

Forrest had missed the cut or retired injured in each of his previous five DP World Tour starts, but he has two top-five finishes at this course in the last five years. He missed a nine-footer for the outright lead at the ninth, his last hole.

Garcia one back; Reed and Penge over par

Soft conditions after 50mm of rain in a week meant preferred lies, but the wind rose through the afternoon and kept scoring in check. Sergio Garcia shot a 67 that included an eagle, and Jacob Skov Olesen was bogey-free.

Reed, back from injury, shot a two-over 73. So did the defending champion, Marco Penge, who had arrived after a 12-hour flight from Utah and topped his drive at the seventh. Both are outside the projected cut, which stood at one over after round one. Ludvig Åberg is level par, Shane Lowry one under and Justin Rose one over, while Tyrrell Hatton is five over. Paul Waring has retired from the event.
