Sabbatini comes from four back with a 62 to win the Stifel Charity Classic
Rory Sabbatini eagled the 15th and birdied the last three holes at Norwood Hills to beat Darren Clarke by one. It is his first win on PGA TOUR Champions, in his 15th start.
Rory Sabbatini was four shots behind on the back nine at Norwood Hills Country Club in St Louis on Sunday and won the Stifel Charity Classic by one. He played the last four holes in five under par for a closing 62 and finished on −14. Darren Clarke, who shot 65, was second. Sabbatini took $350,000 from a $2.3 million purse.
At the par-five 15th Sabbatini holed a 25-foot eagle putt from the fringe. He birdied the 16th and 17th, and on the 18th he holed from about 40 feet up the slope. His card had two eagles, eight birdies and three bogeys. “Just one of those days when you’re trying to stay out of your own way,” he said.
He had started the day tied for ninth, four behind the 36-hole leaders, Henrik Stenson and Mario Tiziani. Both shot 68 and tied for third with Steven Alker. Stenson went bogey-free and parred his last 12 holes, but missed two birdie putts from inside five feet on the back nine. Clarke, the first-round leader after a 64, had seven birdies and a bogey on Sunday. It was his third runner-up finish on PGA TOUR Champions and his best in five appearances at the event.
Sabbatini turned 50 on 2 April and was making his 15th start on PGA TOUR Champions. His previous win on a PGA TOUR-sanctioned tour was the 2011 Honda Classic, the sixth of his PGA TOUR titles. He closed with a 61 to win the silver medal for Slovakia at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
The event was the first of the Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs, and the win lifted Sabbatini from 23rd to seventh in the standings. The top 54 go on to the Simmons Bank Championship in Arkansas this week. Stenson, in only his eighth event of the season, and Tim Petrovic moved inside the 54, knocking out J.J. Henry and Chad Campbell. Campbell bogeyed three of his last five holes and missed out by $402.
