Callaway brings back Harry Arnett as chief brand officer

Arnett ran Callaway's marketing from 2012 to 2019, a period in which its US share of hard-goods sales rose to 24.0%. He returns two months after the Good Good driver advert that Callaway's own review process failed to stop.

Callaway has rehired Harry Arnett as senior vice president and chief brand officer, the company said on Monday. During his first spell in charge of its marketing, Callaway’s share of US hard-goods sales by value rose by more than 1,000 basis points, to 24.0%. This time he will run global brand strategy and what Callaway calls “demand creation”. The release gives no start date.

Arnett joined from TaylorMade in June 2012 and left on 31 August 2019 as executive vice president of global marketing and Callaway brands, MyGolfSpy reports. Callaway won back its place as the No. 1 club brand in the US in 2015 and held it until 2020. Chip Brewer, the chief executive, cited Golf DataTech figures for both claims.

Arnett then co-founded the apparel brand Municipal with Mark Wahlberg and ran it as chief executive until stepping back this month.

The release does not mention Good Good. In August Callaway ended its partnership with the YouTube group over an advert for a co-branded Quantum driver. In the clip, Good Good’s co-founder Garrett Clark shoves the creator Alexis Miestowski to the ground as she reaches into his bag. Brewer apologised and said the company’s review and approval process for the clip had been “not comprehensive enough”. Callaway changed how content is signed off, parted company with Alex Upegui, its director of content and production, and pledged $1 million to organisations working to prevent violence against women, Yahoo Finance reports.

Callaway Golf Company, which trades on the New York Stock Exchange as CALY, also owns Odyssey, TravisMathew and OGIO.
