LIV's Indianapolis winner La Sasso heads to DP World Tour Q School

Michael La Sasso, who beat Jon Rahm by a shot in August, is one of five LIV players in the second stage in Spain from 29 October, four days after the deadline for LIV players to commit to LIV 2.0.

At Desert Springs in Almería next week, Michael La Sasso will play the second stage of DP World Tour Qualifying School, two months after beating Jon Rahm by a shot at LIV Golf Indianapolis. He is one of five LIV players in the second stage, which runs from 29 October to 1 November at four courses in Spain, bunkered reported on Tuesday.

La Sasso, 22, shot 60 in the second round in Indianapolis and won at −18 to become the youngest winner in LIV’s five seasons. He only just made it through the first stage at Seddiner See in Germany in September. Three over at halfway, he closed with a 67 that included birdies on four of his last six holes and tied for 18th, exactly on the qualifying mark, according to AmateurGolf.com. Yosuke Asaji, who reached LIV through the Asian Tour’s International Series, finished ninth there at −8; bunkered lists him as the fifth LIV player in the second stage.

Two Fireballs GC players came through the first stage at Huddersfield. José Luis Ballester, the 2024 US Amateur champion, was two over and outside the mark after 54 holes, then shot a bogey-free 65 to tie for eighth. “Having full membership on the DP World Tour next season is one of my goals,” he told bunkered at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. He plays the second stage at Fontanals in Girona. Luis Masaveu, ranked 810th in the world, parred his last four holes to finish on the mark at level par and goes to Golf Las Pinaillas in Albacete. Peter Uihlein, one of LIV’s original 2022 signings, was disqualified at Huddersfield for missing his third-round tee time after rounds of 74 and 73.

Sam Horsfield of Majesticks GC starts at the second stage, at Isla Canela Links in Huelva. He won the final stage in 2017 by eight shots at Lumine in Tarragona.

Each second-stage site plays 72 holes without a cut, and the leading finishers go on to the final stage at INFINITUM in Tarragona on 6–11 November: six rounds, 156 players and cards for the top 15 and ties. LIV’s players have until 25 October to commit to LIV 2.0. The league has told the bankruptcy court in New Jersey that it expects to decide by 31 October, the day before the second stage ends, whether it will carry on.

La Sasso has also committed to the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open in December, which the DP World Tour co-sanctions with the Sunshine Tour.
