PGA Tour Champions 2027 opens at Waialae and ends at Papago
The Sony name and Waialae Country Club move from the PGA TOUR to the senior tour. It plays for more than $70 million in 2027, the first year it pays nothing into its players' pension fund.
Waialae Country Club in Honolulu, which has no PGA TOUR event in 2027 after the Sony Open in Hawaii was left off the schedule, will open the PGA Tour Champions season instead. The senior tour released its schedule on Wednesday. The Sony Championship Hawaii is on 14–16 January and the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai on the Big Island follows on 21–23 January. Both finish on a Saturday.
The 2027 season has 27 official events, 24 in the regular season and three in the Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs, with two more in a December Challenge Season. The tour says the events are worth more than $70 million and visit 18 US states, Wales, Portugal and Canada. It is the first season in which the tour pays nothing into its players’ pension fund, which received $8 million this year.
The Hoag Senior Players Championship at Newport Beach Country Club on 25–28 March is the first of the five senior majors. Newport Beach has been on the senior tour since 1996. The Senior PGA Championship returns to The Concession in Bradenton, Florida, on 15–18 April, the Regions Tradition is at Greystone in Birmingham, Alabama, on 13–16 May, and the US Senior Open is at Oak Tree National in Edmond, Oklahoma, on 1–4 July. Royal Porthcawl stages the ISPS HANDA Senior Open for the fourth time on 22–25 July.
The Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs again start in St Louis, at the Stifel Charity Classic on 22–24 October, and continue at the Simmons Bank Championship in Little Rock a week later. The Charles Schwab Cup Championship moves across Phoenix from Phoenix Country Club to Papago Golf Club on 12–14 November.
Scott McCarron and David Toms expect more events to arrive once the PGA TOUR’s two-tier structure starts in 2028. “We might pick up some tournaments that don’t stay,” McCarron told Golfweek. Toms named the Zurich Classic of New Orleans as an event that could make a business case for moving to the senior tour, Golfweek reported.
The Skechers World Champions Cup, for teams representing the United States, Europe and the International side, is on 2–5 December at a venue still to be announced. The PNC Championship follows at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Orlando on 18–19 December.
